2021 NHL draft live updates

The 2019 NHL draft is still a couple of months away, but who will your favourite team pick up? You can follow along on Twitter and we will be posting every pick here at verifiedtasks.com, so you can track the action as it happens. But there will be no better place to keep updated as the NHL draft moves into the final hours than our fully live blog.

The NHL draft is going to be held in Vancouver, Canada, on Friday June 1st and Saturday June 2nd. With the 2021 draft taking place on Friday June 1st and Saturday June 2nd, the NHL has decided to keep their draft in the same city. The NHL draft is a yearly event that is held at the conclusion of the regular season.

It’s a little known fact that there are four players from Canada that will be playing in the NHL next year. Despite this, only two of them are known by a large percentage of the public. There’s a reason for this: the NHL draft occurs in the second-last week of May, during a time when the hockey world is fast asleep, and the first round of it is not broadcast outside of Canada.. The NHL draft for 2021 is underway, and we’ll be covering all 224 selections over two days and seven rounds, beginning with the Buffalo Sabres’ selection of Owen Power at No. 1 overall. Each pick will be shown live on Friday and Saturday. In addition, Greg Wyshynski will examine how each first-round pick fits into his new club.

Due to inconsistent — or nonexistent — seasons for many junior, college, and/or foreign leagues during the COVID-19 epidemic, there is no agreement on rankings and assessments for this year’s class of prospects. However, the bunch is very skilled, with a number of potential NHL impact players.

The Seattle Kraken, who had recently completed their full expansion draft and made their first ever draft selection at No. 2 overall, followed the Sabres in Round 1. (Matthew Beniers).

As they happen, here are the NHL draft selections for 2021, along with immediate commentary on each Round 1 selection. Rounds 2 through 7 will resume on Saturday at 11 a.m. ET (NHL Network).

ROUND 1

1617223606_90_1-31-poll-plus-the-biggest-concern-for-every-team

Michigan is the name of the team (Big Ten) 1st place | Canadian nationality Age: 18; Height: 6-6; Weight: 213; Shot: L 26 GP, 3 G, and 13 A

How he fits: It’s not every year that a club receives the top overall selection in the draft twice in a row. It’s also not often that a club utilizes its first two choices to choose defenders, but that’s how the Sabres’ draft classes have gone. Rasmus Dahlin, the No. 1 overall pick in 2018, hasn’t quite reached the level of franchise defender yet, but he’s just 21. Now Power joins him as a left-side defender Buffalo can develop around over the next decade, possibly utilizing the assets acquired in a potential Jack Eichel deal. Wyshynski (Wyshynski)

Michigan is the name of the team (Big Ten) 3rd place | American nationality Age: 18; Height: 6-2; Weight: 175; Shot: L 24 GP, 10 G, and 14 A

How he fits: Dave Hakstol, the Kraken’s head coach, told me that his general manager, Ron Francis, was looking for players that reminded him of the way he used to play. Well, he recently selected a two-way center with excellent skating ability, a powerful offensive, and a “leads-by-example” work ethic, all of which Francis should be acquainted with. Beniers is an excellent foundation for the NHL’s newest team. Beniers admired Patrice Bergeron as a kid, but he may wind up becoming the Kraken’s Jonathan Toews one day. Wyshynski (Wyshynski)

How he fits: As the Ryan Getzlaf era fades into memory, the Ducks add another skilled center with a power game to their lineup. McTavish’s draft stock has risen in recent weeks, and it’s easy to understand why: He possesses an NHL shot, is a physical player, and has been compared to Ryan O’Reilly. With winger Trevor Zegras, defender Jamie Drysdale, and now McTavish, Anaheim has a strong foundation. Wyshynski (Wyshynski)

U-18 Team of the United States (NTDP) 5th place | American nationality Age: 17; Height: 6-2; Weight: 184; Shot: L 38 GP, 6 G, and 28 A

How he fits in: Obviously, the ultimate goal is to assemble two Hughes brothers in the hopes of luring Quinn Hughes to the Devils at some time. Maybe… just joking. Luke Hughes may lack Quinn Hughes’ offensive flair, but his strong two-way game will be a valuable addition to the Devils as he joins Ty Smith among the next-generation defenders. And if everything else fails, the team has the Brothers Hughes as a marketing hook — and a happy star in Jack Hughes, which is always a plus. Wyshynski (Wyshynski)

Michigan is the name of the team (Big Ten) 7th place | Canadian nationality Age: 18; Height: 6-1; Weight: 167; Shot: L 26 GP, 9 G, and 18 A

How he fits: The Blue Jackets have been looking for a franchise center for a long time. Before selling both Ryan Johansen and Pierre-Luc Dubois, they believed they had one. Now comes Johnson, a late bloomer who enjoyed a breakout rookie season at Michigan, earning All-Big Ten honors. One problem is that he may be better on the wing, where many draft experts think he’ll put up massive numbers in the NHL. He’ll be a top playmaker wherever he goes. Wyshynski (Wyshynski)

Frolunda Jr. is the name of the team (Sweden Jr.) 8th place | Swedish nationality Age: 18; Height: 6-4; Weight: 198; Shot: L 14 GP, 1 G, and 5 A

How he fits in: The Red Wings have signed a talented Swede. In other news, the water continues to be wet. Edvinsson offers Detroit a player who many believe has the potential to be a franchise defenseman. In Moritz Seider, the Red Wings now have a fundamental 6-foot-5 defender on the left side to complement their foundational 6-foot-4 defenseman on the right. Hey, the Red Wings know what it’s like to attempt to construct a team from the ground up with Swedish defenders. Inquire of Steve Yzerman. Wyshynski (Wyshynski)

Djurgarden is the name of the team (Sweden) 2nd place | Swedish nationality Age: 18; Height: 5-10; Weight: 176; Shot: L 40 GP, 11 G, and 12 A

How he fits: This is the first top-10 pick the Sharks have had since taking Timo Meier at No. 9 overall in 2015. Eklund gives the Sharks a silky smooth offensive player who also takes care of business at the other end of the rink. The Sharks don’t exactly have a robust prospect pool and don’t have anyone at the forward spot at the caliber of Eklund. — Wyshynski

Team: Barrie (OHL) | Nationality: Canadian Age: 18 | Height: 6-2 | Weight: 185 | Rifle:

Clarke joins the Kings’ prospect pool, which is perhaps the deepest in the NHL. However, despite its depth, that pool contains more large fish in the center and wing than the blue line. Given the team’s need and GM Rob Blake’s history as a Hall of Fame defender, this was one of the most obvious selections in the draft. Clarke has already been compared to Adam Fox, who had a similar effect early in his NHL career with the Rangers, due to his hockey sense and offensive acumen. The Norris Trophy was just awarded to Fox. Brandt, don’t put any pressure on yourself. Wyshynski (Wyshynski)

1617223592_147_1-31-poll-plus-the-biggest-concern-for-every-team

Edmonton as a team (WHL) 4th place | Canadian nationality Age: 18 | Height: 6-2 | Weight: 175 | Rifle: 12 GP, 12 G, and 12 A

How he fits: The Coyotes began the day without a first-round pick (No. 11), which they had to relinquish due to a violation of the NHL’s scouting combine testing regulations. Then, in the trade that brought Oliver Ekman-Larsson to Vancouver, the Canucks traded the ninth overall pick to Arizona, and now we can officially add Guenther as part of the bounty Arizona got in that transaction. Many people predicted that he would go to the Ducks as high as No. 3 overall. He’ll join the Coyotes in Phoenix, where he’ll provide the type of goal scorer they’ve been lacking in their prospect pipeline. His shooting is excellent, but his ability to maneuver into tight places to make the shot is equally remarkable. Wyshynski (Wyshynski)

Three adjectives that describe how he fits in: It’s… off… the… board. Boucher is going to be a fantastic professional. He’s a tough winger who plays the sort of blue-collar, hard-nosed style that Senators coach D.J. Smith likes. Boucher, on the other hand, was rated as the 25th best skater in North America by Central Scouting. There wasn’t a single mock draft that had him ranked this high. The Senators may find moving down to where they think he’ll wind up too much of a guessing game. They wanted him, and they got him with the No. 10 selection. But it was a gamble, and it came at the expense of not selecting one of the two goaltenders available in the first round. Wyshynski (Wyshynski)

1617223592_147_1-31-poll-plus-the-biggest-concern-for-every-team

Team: Sioux Falls (USHL) | Nationality: Canadian Age: 18; Height: 6-0; Weight: 197; Shot: L 31 GP, 24 G, 22 A GP, 24 G, 22 A GP, 24 G, 22 A GP, 24 G,

Mike “Suitcase” Sillinger played with the Blue Jackets from 2001 to 2003, thus he meets the bill. His kid is now being groomed to join the Columbus clan. He possesses a great shot and plays an aggressive style of attack for the Sioux Falls Stampede, scoring 46 points in 31 games last season. The Blue Jackets get their second first-round forward. Since 2014, they’ve only used their first two selections on forwards once. Has the end of John Tortorella’s tenure signaled the start of a more attacking era? Wyshynski (Wyshynski)

1617223599_538_1-31-poll-plus-the-biggest-concern-for-every-team

Chicago as a team (USHL) The United States of America is ranked 16th in the world. Age: 18 | Height: 5-10 | Weight: 183 | Rifle: 51 GP, 48 G, and 37 A

How he fits: Another spot where goalies Jesper Wallstedt or Sebastian Cossa were said to be considered. The Flames, on the other hand, chose Coronato, a goal scorer with an uncanny ability to find the back of the net. He’s headed to Harvard after scoring 48 goals in 51 games for the USHL previous season. This is a good selection if the Flames didn’t think either goaltender was their future. Wyshynski (Wyshynski)

Leksand is the name of the team (Sweden) 25th place | Swedish nationality Age: 18; Height: 5-11; Weight: 156; Shot: L 22 GP, 0 G, and 1 A

How he fits in: Another team in need of a goalkeeper, but one that chose not to pick one. Instead, the Sabres go for Rosen, a fantastic attacking forward. The current NHL game necessitates the ability to make quick decisions. Rosen has the ability to skate away from opponents and create space. His ability to shoot the ball while in full stride has drawn parallels to Nikolaj Ehlers. That’s something the Sabres could use as well. Wyshynski (Wyshynski)

1617223603_466_1-31-poll-plus-the-biggest-concern-for-every-team

Edmonton as a team (WHL) CAN | 14th place | Nationality: Age: 18; Height: 6-6; Weight: 210; Catch: L 19 GP, 0.941 save percentage, 1.57 GAA

How he fits: The Red Wings traded the No. 23 pick, as well as the 48th and 138th overall picks, to the Stars in exchange for this pick. That was obviously due to the fact that Cossa was still on the board. Cossa is a 6-foot-6 center with excellent crease agility. For the Edmonton Oil Kings, he was 17-1-1 with a.941 save percentage. The Red Wings didn’t have anybody in the mold of a future goaltender when Keith Petruzzelli declined to join with the club. Cossa matches that pattern, as well as GM Steve Yzerman’s approach. He didn’t have a potential goalkeeper with the Lightning in 2012, so he took a youngster from the Russian juniors in the first round. Andrei Vasilevskiy just won the Conn Smythe Trophy and his second Stanley Cup in a row. Wyshynski (Wyshynski)

Flint (OHL) | Nationality: CAN | Team: Flint (OHL) | Ranking: 21 Age: 18; Height: 6-0; Weight: 175; Shot: L

How he fits: Othmann isn’t the greatest forward on the market (that distinction belongs to Chaz Lucius, Fabian Lysell, or Fedor Svechkov), but he fills a specific need for the Rangers. He is a fast player who enjoys getting on the forecheck, and he was a standout part of the Canadian World Junior squad this season. He also played in the Swiss League professionally. He may be closer to make an NHL impact than some of the other first-round forwards, which is excellent news for a Rangers club on the verge of breaking into contention. Wyshynski (Wyshynski)

1617223590_234_1-31-poll-plus-the-biggest-concern-for-every-team

Rimouski is the name of the team (QMJHL) CAN | 28th place | Nationality: Age: 18; Height: 6-1; Weight: 175; Shot: L 27 GP, 10 G, and 19 A

How he fits: For the Blues, this is a bit of a stretch. Bolduc lacks an NHL frame and isn’t among the best skaters in the first round. He does, however, have a good wrist shot and has the potential to grow into a top-six forward. Others may have been more certain. GM Doug Armstrong, on the other hand, gets a center, which is a position of need in the Blues’ very small prospect pool. Wyshynski (Wyshynski)

1617223586_668_1-31-poll-plus-the-biggest-concern-for-every-team

U-18 Team of the United States (NTDP) Rank: 10 | Country of Origin: United States of America Age: 18 | Height: 6-1 | Weight: 185 | Rifle: 13 GP, 13 G, and 7 A

How he fits: We’re torn on this one. Lucius is a really solid pick, no doubt. He is a goal scorer, a playmaker and a USA Hockey product — and GM Kevin Cheveldayoff no doubt has visions of another Kyle Connor dancing through his head. Lucius missed a lot of time due to knee surgery but has enough proof of concept to earn this draft placement. However, these are the Jets. We all know about their defensive needs. Having one of the defensemen still on the board join Dylan Samberg and Ville Heinola as the future of the Winnipeg defensive corps wouldn’t have been a bad choice, either. — Wyshynski

1617223591_595_1-31-poll-plus-the-biggest-concern-for-every-team

Togliatti’s team (Russia 2) RUSSIA | 22nd place | Nationality: RUSSIA Age: 18; Height: 6-0; Weight: 187; Shot: L 38 GP, 5 G, and 10 A

How he fits: GM David Poile returns to Russia to draft Svechkov after choosing goalkeeper Yaroslav Askarov with the 11th overall selection last season. In international play for Russia, the center put up some impressive scoring statistics, including 10 points in seven games at the World Juniors. He can also initiate offensive plays from the defensive end. If Svechkov can’t make the jump to the NHL straight away, the Predators will hold off on this one. Wyshynski (Wyshynski)

How he fits: The Wild got this pick by trading the 22nd and 90th overall picks to the Oilers in another goaltender trade-up. With Wallstedt, there’s proof of concept in both international play and one season in the Swedish Hockey League. He’s a little shorter than Sebastian Cossa, but at 6-foot-3, he’s no slouch. He has the necessary skills to become a No. 1 in the NHL. The system’s top goalkeeper prospect is already on the roster: Kaapo Kahkonen, 24, was most recently exposed at the expansion draft in Seattle. The ceiling in Wallstedt is higher. Wyshynski (Wyshynski)

Swerve! That’s how he fits! Don Sweeney, a former NHL defender, has chosen a blueliner with his first selection in five of his six drafts with the Bruins. Instead, he chooses Lysell in this situation. With a mix of blazing-fast skating and a great shot, there are few offensive players in the first round with his “wow” effect. He’s also a skilled stick handler, particularly in the attacking zone. Lysell, like Isak Rosen, has drawn parallels to Nikolaj Ehlers, but he’ll need to bulk up a little more to make an NHL impact. Wyshynski (Wyshynski)

How he fits: Bourgault is a stretch here, but it’s all relative until you get to the bottom of the first round. Over the last two seasons, he has racked up 111 points in 92 games in the QMJHL. It’s a great bit of business for GM Ken Holland that Edmonton was still able to acquire the guy it wanted despite moving down two places. Wyshynski (Wyshynski)

1617223597_437_1-31-poll-plus-the-biggest-concern-for-every-team

NR | Nationality: CAN | Team: Windsor (OHL) Age: 18 | Height: 6-1 | Weight: 178 | Rifle:

How he fits: He’s an intriguing choice. Given that many mock drafts had Johnston on the bubble or in the second round, the Stars might have moved down and still gotten him. He had a good U18 World Juniors performance, scoring four goals in seven games, and he has excellent offensive hockey sense. Despite not playing last year due to the OHL COVID-19 delay, Johnston was the 16th-ranked North American skater by NHL Central Scouting, and he was the 16th-ranked North American skater by NHL Central Scouting. Chicago as a team (USHL) Ranking: 27 | Nationality: United States of America Age: 18 | Height: 5-11 | Weight: 191 | Rifle: 36 GP, 13 G, and 24 A

How he fits: NHL Central Scouting rated Samoskevich as the 26th best North American skater. He has the skating and offensive skills necessary to lead a rush and force the opposition back into its own zone. As a member of a Michigan team aiming for a national title, his profile will undoubtedly rise. Although few mock drafts had him in the first round, GM Bill Zito plainly believed that moving down was pointless. Wyshynski (Wyshynski)

1617223600_217_1-31-poll-plus-the-biggest-concern-for-every-team

Brooks’ team (AJHL) CAN | 18th place | Nationality: Age: 18 | Height: 6-2 | Weight: 198 | Rifle: 8 GP, 4 G, and 7 A

How he fits: After selecting forwards with his first two selections, GM Jarmo Kekalainen completes his first-round hat trick with a defender. Ceulemans is a powerful defender, but he’s also a skilled skater with a knack for shooting the puck. He’ll be going to Wisconsin, which has produced a few of excellent defensemen. It’s fortunate for the Blue Jackets that he was here; it’s not often that defenders are chosen 15 selections apart in an NHL draft. Wyshynski (Wyshynski)

How he fits: If the injury issues are addressed, Lambos could be a great selection for GM Bill Guerin here. He’s a puck-handling, smooth-skating player who can also manage a power play. He’s received comparisons from Alex Pietrangelo, which is hard to pass up for the Wild. Wyshynski (Wyshynski)

Halifax as a team (QMJHL) 30th place | Canadian nationality Age: 18; Height: 5-11; Weight: 196; Shot: L 33 GP, 19 G, and 20 A

How he fits: The Predators sent the Nos. 40 and 51 selections to the Hurricanes in exchange for this pick. They chose one of the more controversial players in the first round as their target. He makes contact. He is a fighter. But, in addition to his tenacity, he also possesses a good attacking game. In his game, he has some Brad Marchand DNA. It’s an excellent choice. How he fits: Olausson is a big shooter with good puck control, but most importantly, he can play a 200-foot game. The Avalanche have some true blue-chippers in center and on defense, but they could need some more high-end talent on the wings. Olausson was rumored to be going as high as No. 16, so this is a solid selection for GM Joe Sakic. Wyshynski (Wyshynski)

How he fits: With several very good forwards still available, the Devils take a risk here. However, few of them seem to have the potential to be the kind of force forward that Stillman does. Aside from Nolan Foote, the Devils don’t have anybody in their prospect pool that fits that description. They seem to have drafted for necessity here, which means they passed up on some more interesting possibilities like Francesco Pinelli, Samu Tuomaala, and Aatu Raty. NHL Central Scouting rated Stillman as the 35th best North American skater. Wyshynski (Wyshynski)

How he fits: The Golden Knights have a shortage of centers, both on the main roster and in their farm system. It was anticipated that the team would move there, and Dean is the right person for the job. He’s had some success in the QMJHL, but nothing spectacular. His strength is in his overall game, as a workhorse who can contribute on both the power play and the penalty kill. There were a few other possibilities here, but Dean was predicted to go right around the first-round criterion. Wyshynski (Wyshynski)

How he fits: The Canadiens drafted a guy who had requested not to be drafted in the first round. There is a moral issue here. Mailloux was on loan with SK Lejon, a Swedish third-tier club, when he was punished by police for sending a picture of him and a lady engaging in a consenting sexual act to his colleagues through Snapchat — a photo that was shot without her permission. The lady went to the police station. Mailloux was not detained, but he was charged with slander and invasion of privacy. The fine was $1,650, according to Daily Faceoff, which broke the news first.

Mailloux has been doing work away from the spotlight since the incident, beginning the process to earn a second chance in the 2022. But that process has just started. It isn’t even guaranteed that he will return to play for the London Knights next season. For the Canadiens to select him in this draft is calculated and unsettling. There’s a victim here who just saw her assailant still rewarded with a first-round selection despite unofficially pulling himself out of the draft.

But now that we’ve confirmed that… In the second round, Montreal had two selections. In the third round, there were two more. In the fourth round, there were three more. Prior to his indiscretions, Mailloux was seen as a lower first-round prospect. His choice to withdraw himself from the selection, as well as the reasons for his decision, would have certainly pushed him down the draft board. Even if the Canadiens wanted to do the ethically dubious thing and choose Mailloux in this draft, doing so with a first-round pick is logically untenable. Wyshynski (Wyshynski)

How he fits: With their last first-round selection, the Blackhawks selected their second-most-notable defender of the day. While Allan doesn’t have the potential to be Seth Jones, particularly since he’s a raw offensive skill, he skates well enough to play in the NHL right now and can take care of his own business. Allan is a good addition to the prospect pool in Chicago. Wyshynski (Wyshynski)
