10 years later, Kid Icarus Uprising is proof that Sakurai should be allowed to do whatever he wants

Ten years after its release, Kid Icarus Uprising is still considered one of the best games in the history of Nintendo. The game offered players a degree of freedom that had never been seen before and paved the way for innovative titles like Super Smash Brothers Ultimate. Despite this success, Sakurai’s latest work was met with mixed reactions due to long-time fans feeling betrayed by his decision to make it so difficult.,

The “Kid Icarus: Uprising” is a game that was released on the Nintendo 3DS in Japan on March 23, 2012. The game was released for the Wii U on June 30, 2015. This game is proof that Sakurai should be allowed to do whatever he wants.

Back when it was launched 10 years ago, Kid Icarus: Uprising was a polarizing game due to its touchscreen controls. Regardless, I believe it is one of the best portable games Nintendo has ever made. According to legend, late Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata gave Super Smash Bros. and Kirby director Masahiro Sakurai full reign to choose an as-yet-dormant Nintendo franchise for a new game. He selected Kid Icarus and delivered a spectacular action game featuring on-rails shooting, third-person action portions, and a hilariously wacky plot.

Kid Icarus: Uprising was such a wild ride that it serves as irrefutable evidence that Sakurai should be free to do anything he wants. If you give him the keys to something, he’ll make it happen. It’s past time for Nintendo to relinquish control and let Sakurai build another enjoyable game brimming with unlocked goodies and game modes.

Kid Icarus: Uprising has become a warmly remembered game in the years after its western release on March 23, 2012. Controls-related complaints have mostly been ignored. The colorful tale, funny dialogue, and extensive customization choices are remembered by fans of the frantic action game. 

One of the game’s most lasting legacies was its clever approach to difficulty choices. You might gamble earned hearts before each assignment to boost the difficulty from 0.0 to 9.0. The more difficult the level, the richer the benefits for finishing it. For example, in Uprising, you could earn a plethora of weaponry to use in the game’s singleplayer and great multiplayer modes. In Super Smash Bros. for 3DS and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, Sakurai employed the same difficulty choices. Sakurai’s approach to difficulty was novel; its risk-reward system allowed you to play the game anyway you wanted. We’d want to see a more common use of this strategy.

The representation of Pit, Palutena, Hades, and the rest of the ensemble in Kid Icarus: Uprising has to be the most lasting aspect of the film. Uprising’s take on Greek mythology was amusing, with the actors continually tearing one other apart. Consider Star Fox, but with a never-ending sense of humour. Many people consider Hades to be the finest gaming adaptation of Greek mythology, but I like Kid Icarus’ zany approach. It’s fair to say I’m not alone in my admiration for Uprising’s characters and storytelling, as seen by the abundance of fan art and requests for a sequel 10 years later.

Personally, I believe Sakurai should be allowed to work on a long-dormant Nintendo property once again. While a Switch sequel to Kid Icarus: Uprising would be fantastic (and people may not gripe about the controls this time), Sakurai is best when he’s left to his own devices. Sakurai pondered making a new Star Fox game before settling on Kid Icarus, and that’s something we’d love to see. However, it makes no difference what Sakurai creates. Whatever he creates will almost certainly be fantastic.

Sakurai’s own development firm, Project Sora, unfortunately ceased down in 2012. Kid Icarus: Uprising was both the studio’s first and last game. This doesn’t rule out the possibility of reuniting the band for one more trip, or of establishing a new studio or collaborating with an existing one to give fans the Ice Climber sequel they deserve.

When Kid Icarus: Uprising was launched in 2012, it was a breath of new air. It demonstrates what Sakurai is capable of when he is not bound by the constraints of Super Smash Bros. He might resurrect a number of defunct Nintendo franchises with a new installment. We’ll be satisfied with anything he decides as long as it’s as spectacular and feature-packed as Uprising. We’ll be just as happy if Sakurai decides to develop a sequel to Kid Icarus: Uprising.
